PAID INTERNSHIPS
2013 - 2014 Internship Program

The Athletics Department anticipates internship opportunities in the following areas: Athletic Communications; Marketing; Events & Operations; Ticket Office; Multimedia; Cross Country/Track & Field and Compliance.   

SCHEDULE:  Start dates will typically be in late July or early August 2013.  We expect that you will be able to commit to working for 10 months.  You will generally work 40 hours per week.  Evening and weekend work will be required.  Your schedule may vary to accommodate evening and weekend work.   There may be times when you will work in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain). 

WHAT WE OFFER:  Paid interns are compensated at $10 per hour.  Volunteer internships are not paid.  Harvard offers variety – we have 41 varsity programs, soon to be 42 with the addition of women's rugby, and a numbers of junior varsity programs. The Athletics Department has team spirit and fun activities. Marketing Internship
The Harvard University Department of Athletics is currently accepting applications for two 7-month interns in Athletic Marketing and Promotions. The interns will report directly to the Marketing Manager. Responsibilities include: assisting in the development and implementation of marketing plans; creating and executing promotions for all 41 Varsity programs, soon to be 42 with the addition of women's rugby,especially concentrated on football, men’s and women’s hockey, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s lacrosse; increasing attendance through group sales initiatives; in particular managing youth team programs. Day-to-day duties include, but are not limited to: updating marketing content on the website; game-day planning; writing scripts; set up/ breakdown of promotions; distribution of marketing collateral throughout the University and in the Boston area; actively participating in digital advertising and promotion strategies; fulfilling sponsorship commitments, building community relations, and growing marketing databases.  The individuals will also be involved with marketing and working with various student groups to enhance the game day experience for all varsity sports programs. Other responsibilities include overseeing the Crimson Kids Club, supervising student assistants, and soliciting group ticket sales and program advertising sales.

Highly motivated individuals are desired with excellent communication and interpersonal skills required. Previous experience in promotions, marketing, and event management is highly beneficial. Proficiency in Adobe Indesign and Adobe Photoshop is required.  Familiarity with multimedia technology, such as computer and video management is preferred. Athletic Communications Internships
The Harvard University Department of Athletics is currently accepting applications for two (2) 10-month internships in Athletic Communications. The interns will report directly to the Director of Athletic Communications and will assist the Director and the Assistant Directors of Athletic Communications with coverage of the university's 41-sport varsity athletics program, soon to be 42 with the addition of women's rugby. They will work directly with selected teams to effectively promote and publicize the department of athletics through campus, local and national media outlets. The interns will also serve as writers and editors for the department's website as well as for game programs and other printed pieces. They will gain hands-on experience at a number of athletic events. Applicants should have a background in an athletic communications or sports information setting and should have basic experience with Stat Crew in-game statistical programs. Experience shooting and editing video is preferred.

Compliance Office Internship
The Harvard University Department of Athletics is currently accepting applications for a 9-month internship in the Athletics Compliance Department. The compliance office intern will report to the Director of Compliance. The compliance office is responsible for overseeing the compliance program for 41 Division I varsity sports, soon to be 42 with the addition of women's rugby. The internship is designed to expose the individual to all aspects of NCAA compliance operations and to help the individual develop the skills necessary to a successful career in intercollegiate athletics.

Events & Operations Internships
The Harvard University Department of Athletics is accepting applications for two 10-month internships in Athletic Events. The interns will report directly to the Manager of Athletic Events. They will be given the opportunity to learn from qualified professionals in the areas of event, facility, and personnel management. The interns will assist the Manager of Athletic Events and the Assistant Director of Athletics with logistical arrangements for all intercollegiate contests and non-intercollegiate events. They will learn to manage each facet of an intercollegiate event, from supervising game day event crews to working with visiting teams and officials. In addition, the interns will be able to assist with field and facility scheduling, payment of officials, and the coordination of intercollegiate contest contracts. The Athletic Events Interns will also gain valuable knowledge of field and facility maintenance and preparation and budgetary procedures.

Athletic Equipment Operations Intern
The Harvard University Department of Athletics is currently accepting applications for a 10-month internship in the Athletic Equipment Room. The Athletic Equipment Intern will report directly to the Head and Associate Athletic Equipment Managers.  He or she will be exposed to all aspects of the athletic equipment management as it pertains to all 41 varsity sports, soon to be 42 with the addition of women's rugby, offered at Harvard. The internship will provide the individual an opportunity to learn and develop skills in areas of: order and purchase, budget; inventory control which entails a Web based student and item tracking system. The intern will manage select teams as designated by the Head Equipment Manager and also maintain daily operations within the room. The intern will work directly with coaches, student athletes and administrators on a daily basis to help fulfill the needs requested. This will allow the individual to gain a greater understanding of College Athletics and Equipment Management as a whole.

The successful candidate must be enrolled in a degree-granting program with an accredited college or university that requires an internship as a requirement of the degree process.  Strong organizational, interpersonal, and computer skills are required. Must have a valid state issue driver’s license.

Multimedia Internship 
The Harvard University Department of Athletics is currently accepting applications for a 10-month internship in Athletics Multimedia. The intern will report directly to the Director of Multimedia and Production, and assist with coverage of the university's 41-sport varsity athletics program, soon to be 42 with the addition of women's rugby.

The intern will work as part of the game-day video production team, operating technical equipment to produce and broadcast the video board show and online stream during Harvard athletics events. After appropriate training, the intern will take on the role of Director/Producer at some games, with responsibility over all video and audio elements of the game, and a game-day leadership role over 10-15 game-day video production assistants.

The intern will work in collaboration with the communications and marketing teams, creating broadcast timing sheets and scripts and any required pre-production material. Additionally, the intern will work on post-production video editing projects, creating original content for the GoCrimson.com website, video board shows and online streams.

The intern will gain hands-on experience in game-day productions, non-linear video editing, graphic design and broadcast engineering. Applicants should have a background in video editing and production and should have experience with Adobe Premier and After Effects, or Apple Final Cut and Motion.

The anticipated start date is July 1, 2013 with an anticipated end date of May 1, 2014. The start date for this position is flexible, but will be in July 2013.

Recreation
You will have an opportunity to learn from experienced professionals in the areas of recreation, aquatics, intramural sports, club sports and facility management. You will assist in organizing and planning recreational programming, managing the recreation facilities and also providing facility oversight on select nights and weekends. Responsibilities also include working at the Murr Center front desk, distributing mail, updating facility recreation boards, and keeping the recreation website up to date.  You will also assist the Membership Director with recreational membership sales and inquiries. During the internship you will also work on a large project.  You will plan, coordinate, and budget the majority of the Winter Session program recreation events.  You should be highly motivated, detail-oriented and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Experience working in recreation, intramurals, club sports, aquatics and/or fitness is a plus. Familiarity with Google Calendar and basic web editing preferred but not required.

Volunteer Athletic Communications Internship
The interns will report directly to the Director of Athletic Communications. The interns will assist the Director of Athletic Communications and the Assistant Directors of Athletic Communications with coverage of the university's 41-sport varsity athletics program, soon to be 42 with the addition of women's rugby. The interns will be involved in the record book and other historical archiving projects. They will gain hands-on experience using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe In Design, Stat crew and the Automated Scorebook. The interns will be expected to assist the Athletic Communications staff at a number of athletic events during their tenure. Applicants should have a background in an athletic communications or sports information setting and should have basic experience with Stat Crew in-game statistical programs.

Volunteer Internships (3-5) - Multimedia/ Video
The Harvard University Department of Athletics is currently accepting applications for semester-long and year-long part-time internships in Athletics Multimedia. The interns will report directly to the Director of Multimedia and Production, and assist with coverage of the university's 41-sport varsity athletics program, soon to be 42 with the addition of women's rugby.

The interns will work as part of the game-day video production team, operating technical equipment to produce and broadcast the video board show and online stream during Harvard athletics events. Equipment used will be broadcast video switcher, slow-motion instant replay machine, audio mixer, broadcast HD cameras and on-screen broadcast graphics equipment. All interns will receive technical training, and will have the opportunity to use all the equipment listed above, on a rotating basis.

The interns will gain hands-on experience in video productions, game-day productions and sports broadcasting. Applicants should have a passion for, and knowledge of, college sports. Experience with video production is appreciated, but not required.

Successful candidates must be enrolled in a degree-granting program with an accredited college or university. Interns will work an average of 6-12 hours per week, mostly in evenings and on weekends, depending on the Harvard game schedule.

The internship will take place on the Harvard University Athletics campus in Boston, and will involve working Harvard Athletics events as well as other sporting events taking place at Harvard. Employment opportunities are available in the spring, summer and fall, and may continue through several semesters.

This is an un-paid internship. Candidates who qualify for Federal Work-Study may use their work-study funds for this position.

Volunteer Internships (2-3) - Marketing and Promotions

Volunteer Internship - Marketing, Game Day Promotions
You will gain valuable experience in Division I sports promotions and will report directly to the Marketing Manager.  This position supports the athletic marketing staff with game-day set up/ breakdown and execution of in-game and halftime promotions for all 41, soon to be 42 with the addition of women's rugby, Varsity programs, especially concentrated on football, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's basketball and men's lacrosse.  You  are responsible for increasing the awareness of Harvard Athletics through the distribution of marketing collateral throughout the University campus and in the Boston area.

Mostly weekend and evening hours are required. Candidates must be professional and reliable and possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Volunteer Internship (1-2) - Graphic Design and Multimedia
This volunteer/unpaid position will provide you with valuable experience in Division I sports marketing and will report directly to the Marketing Manager.  You will be responsible for supporting the marketing staff through the creation, publication, maintenance and coordination of marketing collateral materials. Additional responsibilities include creating static graphics for the football/lacrosse and hockey video boards, developing visual content for the website, executing promotional campaigns and increasing the awareness of Harvard Athletics through the distribution of marketing materials.  You will also have multimedia responsibilities, which include coordinating streaming, website content, TV, social networking and new technologies.

Previous experience is print and publication design is strongly preferred. Experience in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop is required. Online advertising and html experience is preferred.

Volunteer Internships  (2-3) - Ticket Office
As a Harvard Athletic Ticket Office intern, you will work under the direction of the Ticket Manager and Ticket Office Staff Assistants while learning all different aspects of a collegiate Ticket Office.  As an intern you will have the flexibility to continue your classwork while gaining experience in ticket operations for events such as Football, Hockey, Basketball, and Men’s Lacrosse. Your primary duties will include answering the incoming ticket line, processing daily and season ticket sales, fulfilling ticket orders, and providing high quality customer service over the phone and during athletic events.  You will learn to use the AudienceView Ticketing Software, and assist with the preparation of games including sales windows, and Will Call for fans, players and coaches tickets.

Editor - Harvard Football Game Day Magazine
The Department of Athletics seeks a part-time assistance for 10 weeks during the football season to serve as the main editor/ project coordinator for it's football game day magazine. Duties include, but are not limited to, writing/ editing content and coordinating layout for a large-scale game day program. The Department of Athletics seeks part-time Public Address Announcers for varsity athletic events throughout the year. Sports of basketball and ice hockey are included. Multimedia/ Video
The Department of Athletics seeks part-time and volunteer assistance throughout the year. Leveraging its website, GoCrimson.com, and well as auxiliary social media sites, the department seeks talented and creative talent to bolster its multimedia and creative video initiatives. Statistics/Writing Staff (Part time) -
The Department of Athletics seeks part-time Statistics/ Writing staff to serve as official statisticians, staff assistants, writers, and media assistants for various sports throughout the year. Event staff assists in field and facility set-up prior to the game as well as performing assigned duties assigned by the game manager. Must be available on weekends and evenings. Events Staff -
The Department of Athletics seeks part-time Events staff to serve as scorekeepers, public address announcers, ball shaggers and equipment movers for various sports throughout the year. Front Desk Monitors-
