Matt Whalen joined the Harvard Athletics staff prior to the start of the 2010-11 season and handles the athletic training needs of the men's ice hockey and men's swimming and diving programs. He was named the Associate Director of Sports Medicine in the summer of 2016.
Whalen came to Harvard following a five-year stint as an assistant athletic trainer at Babson College. He has also served since 2008 as an adjunct professor in the Department of Sports Science at Lasell College. Whalen is a preceptor for the athletic training education programs for Lasell, Salem State University, Bridgewater State University and Boston University.
Whalen earned a master's degree in health promotion and exercise science from California University of Pennsylvania in 2007. He earned a bachelor's degree in physical education, with a concentration in athletic training, from Bridgewater State College in 2004.
Additionally, Whalen has served on the NATA Committee (2008-10), is Graston certified (2012) and most recently served on the Ivy League Ad-Hoc Committee examining concussions in wrestling (2016).
