STOCKTON, Calif. - Former Harvard pitcher Shawn Haviland was named Pitcher of the Year by the Stockton Ports, minor league affiliate of the Oakland A's.
Heading into the postseason, Haviland owns a 9-6 record with a 3.62 ERA in his first 26 games while also getting called up to AAA at one point in the season. He leads the team with 159 strikeouts, ranks second in the California League in strikeouts and first in the A's organization in that category as well. Haviland also leads the Stockton club with 144.1 innings pitched.
Haviland has also walked just 37 batters this season in a team-leading 26 starts. He is fifth in the League with a 3.62 ERA, and also ranks among the top pitchers in the A's organization for ERA. Haviland was named the League Pitcher of the Week for July 26-August 2 and from August 16-22. He tossed a one-hitter on July 29, and combined for a shutout win on August 17, fanning a season-high 11 batters in 6.0 scoreless frames in that game. He was also one of four pitchers named to the California League Post Season All-Star team.
