Scales Named Ivy League Rookie of the Year; 19 Players Named All-Ivy

Treavor Scales is the second consecutive Harvard player to earn Rookie of the Year honors (Dave Silverman)

PRINCETON, N.J. - Harvard running back Treavor Scales has been named as the Ivy League's Rookie of the Year in an announcement made Tuesday afternoon. Scales is one of 19 Harvard players to earn All-Ivy League accolades, falling one pick shy of the program's output from the 2007 season and tying for the third-most honorees in league history.

Harvard had five players named to the league's first team, 10 to the second team and four honorable mention selection.

Offensive linemen Ben Sessions and James Williams were joined on the first team offense by Gino Gordon while a pair of defensive backs - Derrick Barker and Collin Zych - were named to the first team defense.

Brent Osborne and Alex Spisak were named to the second team, giving Harvard four offensive linemen on the list after placing five in 2008. Scales earned the nod on the second team at running back and quarterback Collier Winters and wide receiver Chris Lorditch also earned second team honors.

On the defensive side of the ball, a trio of defensive linemen earned mention despite numerous injuries to the Crimson front. Captain Carl Ehrlich was joined by Josue Ortiz and Chuks Obi. Linebackers Sean Hayes and Jon Takamura also earned mentions.

On the honorable mention team were tight end Nicolai Schwarzkopf, defensive lineman Victor Ojukwu, safety Ran Barnes and place kicker Patrick Long.

Gordon averaged a staggering 5.5 yards per carry this season - his second year as an all-league selection. Gordon had 632 yards on 114 carries and a league-best eight rushing TDs.

Zych and Barker led Harvard's defense throughout the year. Zych led the Ancient Eight in pass breakups (12), passes defended (14) and ranked third in solo tackles for 53. Barker finished the year tied for third in pass breakups (10) and fourth in passes defended (11), marking the third-straight season that he has had those exact figures.

Winters' selection to the all-league team means that Harvard has had an all-league quarterback now in eight of the last nine seasons. Winters led the league in pass efficiency and his seven interceptions was lowest in the league among QBs who played 10 games. Winters averaged 11.9 yards per completion, which also led the league. He finished with 15 TD passes and over 1,800 yards through the air in addition to his dual-threat capabilities in running the ball.

Scales was also among the league leaders in rushing with 4.5 yards per carry on 485 yards on 108 attempts with five rushing TDs - good for third-best in the league. Scales is the second straight Harvard player to earn top rookie honors after DB Matthew Hanson earned the honor last year.

Lorditch meanwhile, led the league in yards per catch at 18.2 - a figure that was nearly three yards better than the second-best figure. Lorditch hauled in 30 passes for 545 yards and three TDs.

Ehrlich had 36 tackles, tying for tops on the team in sacks (4) and second in tackles for loss (6.0). Ortiz had a big junior season in his first extended playing time. Ortiz led the team with 9.0 tackles for a loss while adding two sacks and 35 tackles despite not starting a game. Obi's influence on the Crimson defense was noted by coaches despite him being injured in the first quarter of week eight. Still, he collected 31 tackles with three sacks and five QB hurries.

Takamura had a tremendous senior season with 47 tackles (third on the team) and team leaders in interceptions (4) and sacks (4) while placing second in tackles for a loss with six. Two of his interceptions sealed Harvard victories (Brown, Yale) and he returned an interception for a touchdown in a win at Lehigh. Hayes ranked second on the team in tackles for 49.
