CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Coast Guard Academy senior Pat Bennett and Central Connecticut State junior Gunnar Jespersen received the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Gold Helmet Awards for week two of the 2010 football season. This week's awards were selected by Desmond Conner of the Hartford Courant.
Bennett, a Capitol Heights, Md. native, had a huge impact both returning the football and playing defense in the Coast Guard's 10-8 win over Merchant Marine. Bennett opened the 2010 season in speedy fashion, returning the first kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown. The tri-captain cornerback also made his presence felt on the defensive side of the ball in grand fashion. Bennett blocked a field goal, recorded seven total tackles, four solo, one for a loss, hustled for two pass breakups and forced one fumble.
Jespersen, an Atascadero, Calif. native, was at the offensive helm for the Blue Devils 45-14 defeat of Bentley on Saturday. Jespersen completed 18 of 24 passing attempts, recording 181 yards and two touchdowns in the process. Teammates Raul DeBenendittis and Everette Benjamin He also contributed in the ground game as well, adding 41 yards on eight carries.
