CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Maine senior quarterback Marcus Wasilewski and Anna Maria senior running back Robert Small have been named the New England Football Writers' Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Gold Helmet Award winners for week three of the 2013 football season.
Wasilewski marshaled Maine to a 35-22 victory against Bryant. The Kulpmont, Pa., local hit four different receivers for touchdowns and rushed for another to help the Black Bears to its first 3-0 start since 2002. He connected with seven receivers for completions on 23 of 32 passes for 263 yards and four scores. The senior signal caller also registered a three-yard scoring run, which put Maine on the scoreboard Saturday. Wasilewski added some insurance to the Black Bears lead over the second and third quarter with four consecutive touchdown passes including his most impressive feat of the day a 51-yard scoring pass to Damarr Aultman in the second quarter.
While Wasilewski did his damage in the air, Small made his impact on the ground, as the senior backboned Anna Maria's 55-49 come-from-behind victory against Mass Maritime. Small was the main source of offensive production for the AmCats, as he rushed for 240 yards on 23 carriers, scoring five of Anna Maria's eight touchdowns including three straight in the second frame to lead the AmCats rally from a 42-26 halftime deficit. The Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., native's 30 points helped Anna Maria set a new record for points scored with the 55 point outburst; the former record of 52 points was set in 2011.
