This story begins where so many end: At a hospital, with a family in tears.

It's Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at Egleston Hospital in Atlanta, and doctors just told Norman and Nikki Hayes that their 10-year-old daughter was going to die. They gathered their son, Norman II, and other daughter, Kelsey, in the hospital room where Olivia Hayes would live for three more days.
