NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The Harvard field hockey team lost its Ivy League opener to rival Yale, 5-1, Saturday afternoon at Johnson Field.
Erica Borgo scored one goal and assisted on two others for the Bulldogs (2-, 1-0 Ivy League), Emily Schuckert scored twice. Carly Dickson netted her first goal of the season for the Crimson (2-2, 0-1), and Jenn Hatfield stopped all eight shots to come her way in her first collegiate game. Harvard starter Cynthia Tassopoulos made 12 saves.
After the teams played scoreless field hockey for nearly 12 minutes, the Bulldogs built a lead with three goals in less than nine minutes. Borgo knocked in a bouncing ball for a 1-0 lead. Schuckert's second and third goals of the season came less than three minutes apart and pushed the Yale advantage to 3-0.
Yale also scored the first two goals of the second half. Maddy Sharp struck first, about five minutes after halftime, and Mia Rosati added another goal after another 10 minutes. Hatfield held the Bulldogs off the board the rest of the way, and Dickson scored for Harvard at the 63:39 mark. The senior co-captain scored off a penalty corner following an insert by Katelin Wahl and stop by Kim Goh.
The Crimson will look to rebound Sunday, when it faces Quinnipiac in a nonconference game.
