Four Harvard Heavyweight Boats Advance to IRA Semifinals

CAMDEN, N.J.—All three Harvard heavyweight eights and the Crimson varsity four advanced to their respective semifinals with top-two finishes in their morning heats on the opening day of the 110th Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships Thursday on the Cooper River.

The varsity and second varsity eights opened the morning with wins in Harvard's first two races. The freshman eight, which lost a photo finish to Cornell, and varsity four placed second in their heats. The open four finished fourth and will race in a repechage Friday morning.

"I thought it was a solid race for the varsity, and the JV guys felt like they had a particularly good row," said Harry Parker, the Thomas Bolles Head Coach for Harvard Men's Crew. "It seems like everyone has adjusted well back to the sprint distance, but we'll know for sure tomorrow."

Harvard's varsity eight semifinal will be at 12:15 p.m. Friday. It will be preceded by the open four's repechage at 9:45 a.m., the varsity four's semifinal at 10:15, the freshman eight's semi at 11:15 and the second varsity's semi at 11:45.

The Crimson varsity eight finished about a second ahead of the rest of the field with a time of 5:50.056 in its heat. Boston University upset fourth-seeded California for the second berth straight to the semifinals, but the Golden Bears will get another shot in the repechage Thursday afternoon. Heat winners Brown and Washington and runners-up Wisconsin and Princeton also advanced straight to the semifinals. The top three finishers from each semi move on to Saturday's national championship grand final.

Harvard and Cal were comfortably ahead of the field in their heat, with the Crimson topping the Bears by two seconds in Harvard                5:54.945. Third-place Syracuse was more than 14 seconds behind Cal. The top two boats in Harvard's freshman heat, the Crimson and Big Red, also easily outdistanced the field. Cornell pulled off the closest win of the morning by just seven one-thousandths of a second, finishing in 5:56.437 to Harvard's 5:56.444.

The varsity four posted a runner-up time of 6:44.408, trailing only Cal and more than 12 seconds clear of the rest of the field. The open four finished in 6:38.117.
