Memorial Service for Harry Parker Scheduled for August 17
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- A memorial service for Harry Parker has been scheduled for Saturday, August 17 beginning at 2 p.m. at the Harvard Memorial Church. Parker passed away in June at the age of 77 after serving as The Thomas Bolles Head Coach for Harvard Men's Heavyweight Crew for 51 seasons.
There will also be a row in Harry's honor on Saturday at 9 a.m. and afternoon tea in the tradition of Henley at 3:30 p.m. All events are open to the public.
The row and memorial service will also be streamed online for free at GoCrimson.com/HarryParkerMemorial. The stream will also be shown on a projection screen at the Harvard Science Center, located just north of Harvard Yard.
Parking for the events will be available on Webster Field in the Harvard athletic complex. Attendees can enter through Gate 8 at Harvard Stadium to access parking, which will be free of charge. Rowers should use this parking option and walk to Newell or Weld.
A shuttle service will begin at 12:30 p.m. from the athletic complex to Boylston Gate at Harvard Yard and continue until approximately 2:30 p.m. There will also be smaller vans available for those with mobility issues picking up at the athletic complex and dropping off closer to Memorial Church.
Shuttles will resume at the conclusion of the memorial service and pick up at Boylston Gate. The continuing service will drop off at the athletics parking area, before proceeding to Weld Boathouse, the site of the reception, and back to Boylston Gate.
Widely regarded as the premier rowing coach in the United States, Parker guided the Crimson to 22 undefeated regular seasons, 24 EARC Sprints varsity titles, 21 second varsity Sprints crowns, and a combined 16 official and unofficial national championships. He also owned a 44-7 record in the Harvard-Yale Regatta.
