No. 2 Harvard Lightweights Sweep Delaware in Spring Opener

The Crimson begins to build a lead against the Blue Hens

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The No. 2 Harvard lightweight crew swept four races from visiting Delaware in the Crimson’s season opener under sunny skies Saturday morning on the Charles River.

The Crimson varsity eight pulled away to a nine-second win in 6:16.2, while the second and third varsity eights both finished ahead of the Blue Hens’ second varsity. Harvard’s freshman eight won by nearly seven seconds, and the first of four Harvard freshman fours beat the Blue Hens by 32 seconds.

“It was a beautiful day and a good start for us,” said Harvard head coach Charley Butt. “In the first few races, there’s a lot to learn. When you get a day like this in early April, it’s always great.”

The varsity eight race was tight through the first 500 meters, but the Crimson moved away after that, building a boat-length lead by the midway point. Harvard improved the margin to a length of open water after another 500  meters. The second varsity eight led its teammates and the Blue Hens throughout, finishing in 6:29.9. The Crimson third varsity trailed Delaware early but pulled even before the Harvard Bridge and finished in 6:39.1, 4.6 seconds ahead of the Blue Hens.

Delaware’s freshman eight got off to a good start, but the Crimson came back and led by a seat after 500 meters and nearly a length after 1,000. Harvard withstood a surge by the Blue Hens in the third 500 before pulling away to open water and finishing in 6:29.3. The day’s first race pitted four Harvard freshman fours against one Delaware entry. The Harvard A boat cruised to victory in 7:30.0.
