CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard lightweight crew captured its first win in the Head of the Charles lightweight eights event since 1975 and sixth overall victory in the race Oct. 21 in Boston. The first-place finish gave Harvard its 41st overall medal, which later became 42 after the Radcliffe lightweight's victory, in the history of the Head of the Charles.

Harvard's boat rowed the three-mile Charles River route in 14:35.71, well ahead of its closest competitor. USRowing, which placed second, was nearly 12 seconds off Harvard's pace and Princeton was a distant third in 14:58.24. Yale was fifth at 14:59.70

The win propelled Harvard to the Point Trophy, given to the regatta's superior club, school, college or university.

The Crimson also had a top-ten finish from its fours boat. Harvard navigated the course in 18:01.49 for seventh place in the race won by New York Athletic Club.

In Saturday's action, the lightweight freshman crew placed 12th in the club eights race and another lightweight boating was 26th in the club fours race. The club eights race featured a mix of heavyweight and lightweight boats, including a pair of Harvard heavyweight crews that finished sixth and 10th, respectively.

Harvard also had many alumni and coaches racing in the world's largest two-day regatta. Former lightweight volunteer coach Dave Ringham highlighted the former Crimson that made the trip back to Cambridge with a second-place finish in the club singles event that had 64 entries.
