Ungar Captures Gold, Hawrot Wins Bronze at U.S. Summer National Championships
GRAPEVINE, Texas – Former Harvard fencer
Benjamin Ungar ’09 recently finished first among 57 epee
fencers to take home the gold medal at the 2009 U.S. Summer
National Championships, held July 3-12. Rising sophomore James
Hawrot placed third to earn the bronze medal in the
competition.
During his career at Harvard, Ungar was an individual national
champion in 2006, helping the Crimson win the NCAA team title in
the process that same season. A two-time All-America and All-Ivy
League honoree, Ungar also succeeded in the classroom and garnered
two nods to the Academic All-Ivy League team.
Hawrot boasted an 8-7 record at the Ivy League Championships as a
freshman and placed ninth at the NCAA Regionals in 2008-09.
