Ungar Captures Gold, Hawrot Wins Bronze at U.S. Summer National Championships

GRAPEVINE, Texas – Former Harvard fencer Benjamin Ungar ’09 recently finished first among 57 epee fencers to take home the gold medal at the 2009 U.S. Summer National Championships, held July 3-12. Rising sophomore James Hawrot placed third to earn the bronze medal in the competition.

During his career at Harvard, Ungar was an individual national champion in 2006, helping the Crimson win the NCAA team title in the process that same season. A two-time All-America and All-Ivy League honoree, Ungar also succeeded in the classroom and garnered two nods to the Academic All-Ivy League team.

Hawrot boasted an 8-7 record at the Ivy League Championships as a freshman and placed ninth at the NCAA Regionals in 2008-09.
