On Saturday, April 3rd, the Harvard Men’s Golf Team traveled to New Haven, Conn. to play their first tournament of the spring. The Yale Spring Opener has been shortened to a one-day, 36-hole event held at the Yale Golf Course, designed by Seth Raynor in 1924.

The team was excited to start the spring season and hoped to extend their success of the past two years at the Spring Opener with a third straight team win. The course, softened by a week of rain, was expected to produce low rounds, but difficult greens prevented any competitor from besting par.

The Crimson’s Mark Pollak ‘12, Danny Mayer ‘10, and Connor Wentzell ’12 fired 74 and Greg Shuman ’10 shot 75 in the morning to post a team score of 297. Tony Grillo ’12 rounded out the squad with a well-fought 77, while individual Louis Amira ‘11 played well to score 73. The team. sitting in 3rd place after the first round, one shot behind Skidmore and 9 shots behind the host Bulldogs, were poised to make a charge in the afternoon round.

The Crimson improved their team total in the afternoon round, finishing with 295 to produce a final score of 592.  Mark Pollak ’12 led Harvard in the afternoon with 72, while Tony Grillo ’12 shot 73, Greg Shuman ’10 shot 74, and Connor Wentzell ’12 rounded out the squad with 76. Danny Mayer ’10 broke 80 while individual Louis Amira was unable to continue his success and finished the day with a second round 77. The Crimson ended up 10 strokes behind the first place Yale Bulldogs. Although they were unable to win their third straight Yale Spring Opener, the Crimson are prepared to travel to Princeton next weekend and continue their traditional spring success.
