CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-Freshman defenseman Danny Biega of the Harvard men's hockey team has been voted ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week by the ECAC coaches, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Biega had an outstanding weekend on both ends of the ice to lead the Crimson to a two-game sweep of host Princeton in the teams' ECAC Hockey first-round series. He scored the tying goal as Harvard rallied from a two-goal, third-period deficit for a 4-2 win in Game 1. The Montreal native then sealed the Harvard's 3-0 win in Game 2 by scoring a highlight-reel goal to make it 2-0 in the game's final six minutes and setting up another tally with 75 seconds left.
Defensively, Biega was not on the ice for a goal against and helped the Crimson shut out the Tigers in Game 2 and go 9 for 9 on the penalty kill for the weekend. He registered a +4 plus/minus rating over the two games.
Biega, National Hockey League Central Scouting's 31st-ranked North American for this summer's draft, has five goals-including four in the last five games-and three assists in 30 games on the Harvard blue line.
It is the fourth time this season that a Harvard player has been named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week. Conor Morrison garnered the honor Nov. 30, and Louis Leblanc claimed it Jan. 18 and 25. Sophomore Alex Killorn was the league's Player of the Week Nov. 2.
With the series win against Princeton, Harvard advanced to take on rival Cornell in the ECAC quarterfinals. The Crimson and Big Red will meet Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m. in Ithaca, N.Y., with a deciding game to be played on Sunday, if necessary.
