Former Crimson Skaters Help Lead Bruins to Stanley Cup from Front Office

General manager Peter Chiarelli '87 and the Boston Bruins captured the team's first National Hockey League championship in 39 years with Wednesday night's 4-0 road win against the Vancouver Canucks in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

Chiarelli put together the roster of players that brought the Stanley Cup back to Boston for the first time since 1972. He is one of three Harvard men's hockey players working in the Bruins front office, along with assistant general manager Don Sweeney '88 and director of collegiate scouting John Weisbrod '91.

Chiarelli captained the Crimson to ECAC regular-season and tournament titles and a Frozen Four appearance as a senior. A former assistant general manager with the Ottawa Senators, he has been at the helm of the Bruins organization for five years and directs all aspects of the team's hockey operations. He hired Claude Julien as Boston's head coach in summer 2007 and has continually improved the Bruins' roster with key trades and signings over half a decade.

Sweeney played on Harvard's 1986-87 league-championship team alongside Chiarelli and was a second-team All-America selection the following season before going on to a 16-year NHL career. He is also in his fifth year with the Bruins and is in his second year as assistant general manager.

Both Chiarelli and Sweeney played in the 1986 NCAA final, a 6-5 Crimson loss to Michigan State.  Weisbrod helped Harvard reach the title game again three years later, and he was on the ice when the winning goal sealed the national championship in overtime. A former general manager of the National Basketball Association's Orlando Magic, Weisbrod is in his third season at his current position and his fifth overall with the Bruins.
