CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Junior defenseman Danny Biega of the Harvard men's hockey team has been named to the ECAC Hockey Preseason All-League teams by the conference's coaches and covering media members, the league announced Wednesday.
The Montreal native, a Carolina Hurricanes draftee, was one of five players picked by both the coaches and media. He was joined in that category Dartmouth goaltender James Mello, Rensselaer defenseman Nick Bailen and Yale forwards Brian O'Neill and Andrew Miller. The coaches also selected Brown forward Jack Maclellan, while the media honored St. Lawrence forward Greg Carey.
Biega was named to the all-league second team after leading all ECAC Hockey defensemen in league points (21) and goals (nine) last season. Overall, he led the Crimson in points (30) and assists (19), becoming the first defenseman to lead Harvard in scoring since Mark Fusco '83 in 1981-82. A first-team All-Ivy League and New-England All-Star selection, Biega was the only defenseman in the nation to lead his team in scoring and rank in the top three on his quad in plus/minus (+2).
It is the third time in four years that a Crimson defenseman from the Biega family has earned ECAC preseason honors. Older brother Alex Biega '10 was a preseason pick in 2008-09 and 2009-10.
The league also released its preseason polls Wednesday. Harvard was picked seventh by the league coaches and 12th by the media. The Crimson went 5-1-1 over the final seven games of the 2010-11 regular season, tying Yale for the league's second-best finish, and swept a road series at Clarkson in the opening round of the ECAC Hockey Championship.
