CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—David Valek and Raphael Girard of the Harvard men’s hockey team have been honored by ECAC Hockey for their roles in last weekend’s sweep of St. Lawrence and Clarkson. Valek was named the league’s Player of the Week and Girard was chosen as Goaltender of the Week late Tuesday night.
Valek registered four goals, eight blocked shots and a +4 rating in Harvard’s two wins to clinch a bye in the ECAC Hockey Championship first round. The junior from Zagreb, Croatia, scored twice in Friday’s 4-1 win against the Saints and logged the tying and winning goals in the third period of Saturday’s comeback to beat the Golden Knights, 3-2.
Girard stopped 58 of 61 shots to come his way over the weekend. Two of the three goals he allowed came on the power play. The Saint-Hyacinthe, Que., native made 31saves Friday, including 15 on SLU power plays and 14 during the scoreless second period. Girard followed that effort with 27 stops in Saturday’s one-goal win, allowing the Crimson to rally from two goals down.
Valek’s selection as ECAC Hockey Player of the Week is Harvard’s third of the season. Senior Alex Killorn has earned the honor twice, and freshmen Colin Blackwell, Patrick McNally and Tommy O’Regan have all earned selection as Rookie of the Week. It is the second time this season that Harvard has claimed two of the three weekly ECAC honors. Killorn and Blackwell were both honored Nov. 29.
The Crimson (10-8-11, 8-5-9 ECAC Hockey), seeded third in the ECAC Hockey Championship, begin the tournament with a three-game quarterfinal series March 9-11 at Bright Hockey Center. The winner of that series will advance to the league semifinals March 16 in Atlantic City, N.J. Quarterfinal tickets are available here.
