ECAC Releases Coaches, Media Preseason Polls

The Crimson kicks off its season Oct. 26 with a home game against Bentley (Kevin Burns).

The Harvard men’s hockey team will go into the 2013-2014 season ranked sixth by the ECAC Hockey Coaches’ Preseason Poll.  Surpassing Harvard in the poll include Ivy League rivals Cornell in the five spot, and Yale who secured the top rank heading into the season. In the league media poll, the Crimson was selected 10th.

The Crimson will once again have a rivalry to look forward to, as Yale will start the season ranked number one with four first-place votes in the coaches’ poll. Rensselaer (second), Quinnipiac (T-third), and Union (T-third) all received two first place votes, while Cornell (fifth) and Dartmouth (seventh) both received one first-place vote apiece. Brown (eighth), Colgate (ninth), St. Lawrence (10th), Princeton (11th), and Clarkson (12th) round out the coaches’ preseason rankings.

Rensselaer topped the preseason media poll with 18 first-place votes, followed by Yale, Quinnipiac and Union. Crimson rival Cornell comes in at a tie for fifth in the poll with Dartmouth, followed by St. Lawrence, Brown and Colgate. Princeton (11th) and Clarkson (12th) are the final two teams in the media poll.

Last year, Harvard finished with a 10-19-3 overall record while going 6-14-2 in conference. Going into the tournament last season, the 12th-seeded Crimson upset fifth-seeded Dartmouth in the first of a three game series with a 2-1 victory. However, Dartmouth rebounded and picked up wins in the next two games, 4-1 and 6-3, to claim the series.

The 2013-14 Crimson will be led by senior captain and defenseman Dan Ford along with returning starting goaltender and fellow senior Raphael Girard. With only four seniors on the roster, the Crimson will also look to underclassman leaders on the ice, namely sophomores Jimmy Vesey and Brian Hart.
