Gonos Named Candidate for 2013 Senior CLASS Award

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Twenty NCAA® lacrosse student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected as candidates today for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate men's lacrosse, including Harvard senior captain Jason Gonos. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Gonos, an economics concentrator with a cumulative GPA of 3.50, was voted by his teammates to serve as captain for the 2013 season. He has started as a defenseman in 37 of Harvard's 42 games over the past three seasons, and last year recorded career-highs with 33 groundballs and 14 caused turnovers. Earlier this spring Inside Lacrosse tabbed him as a preseason All-America honorable mention selection.

Even more impressive than his play on the field has been Gonos' work within the community. In November, he organized the Crimson's involvement in Lacrosse Mustache Madness which raised $6,979 for the HEADstrong Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the fight against blood cancer. Gonos has also spent time working with Happy Helpers for the Homeless in his home state of Maryland, helping to feed and clothe the homeless in Glen Burnie, Md.

The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Lacrosse Championships in Philadelphia May 25-27.
