Harvard dropped a 6-0 decision to the Huskies Friday (Gil Talbot).
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men's soccer team fell behind early and was unable to mount a comeback as the Crimson fell to No. 4/3 Connecticut, 6-0, Friday afternoon at Ohiri Field. The loss drops Harvard to 1-3-1 on the year while UConn remains unbeaten at 5-0-1 this season.
The Huskies wasted little time getting on the board, taking a 1-0 edge just 4:31 into the contest. Carlos Alvarez lofted a pass towards the box from near midfield and Mamadou Diouf corralled the pass and put a low shot past Evan Mendez for his third goal of the season. Just over six minutes later, Diouf struck again, picking off a Crimson pass at the top right corner of the box and angling a low shot to the far corner past Mendez for a 2-0 lead. UConn pushed the score to 3-0 on Stephane Diop's first tally of the season, as the senior curled a ball into the far upper corner from the top of the Harvard box.
Harvard's best chance came in the final minutes of the first half. David Barna curled a free kick into the box from near the corner flag and Zack Wolfenzon got off a clean header that went just wide of the goal.
The UConn attack was relentless in the second half as well, as the guests extended their lead to 6-0 on goals from Alvarez, Max Wasserman and Allando Matheson. Mendez finished the day with three saves for the Crimson.
