Sextet of Freshmen to Join Men’s Soccer for 2013-14 Season
Six freshmen are set to join the Crimson for the 2013 season
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Pieter Lehrer, The Virginia B. and James O. Welch Jr. ’52 Head Coach for Harvard Men’s Soccer, announced the addition of six freshmen to the men’s soccer roster for the 2013-14 season. The freshman class boasts players from five different states, including Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Washington and two from Massachusetts.
Lehrer welcomes the group of six student-athletes as he embarks on his first season as head coach of the program. The freshmen will be called upon to make an impact on the 2013-14 squad, as they join a team that posted a 3-11-3 record in 2012. Last year’s freshman class accounted for two of the team’s top three scorers on the season.

Alex Leondis – Defender – Manhasset,
All Conference 2009-2012 and Scholar Athlete 2009-2012 … New York State Cup Champion with Dix Hills Thunder 2005-2009 … Region 1 champions 2008-2009 … 2009 National Bronze Medalists … Member of New York State ODP team 2005-2009 … National Honors Society … 2012 AP Scholar with Distinction, completing 13 AP classes … Member of the Math and Spanish Honor Society.
Amahdi Shabaka – Defender – Montclair,
Led Montclair to 2012 North Jersey section 1 championship … Named to third team All-State … All-Super Essex Conference second team and All-Essex County second team … Helped club team 10 2010 N.J. Cup U-15 championship and 2012 NJYS State Cup U-17 title … 2012 New York Federal Reserve Fed Challenge Champions and runner up in 2013.
Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu – Midfielder –

Lettered all four years in soccer … Also lettered three years in basketball and one year in track … First team all-league and all-state junior and senior year … ISL Offensive Player of the Year … MPS Player of the Season twice for U13 team and one for U15 squad … Roxbury Latin soccer 2012 New England Prep School Class B Champions … 23 career goals and 19 assists.
Daniel Smith – Forward – Bellevue,
Lettered all four years in soccer and lettered three years for cross country … Played for club team that was Disney soccer showcase U-17 champions in 2011 … Washington State Cup champions seven out of eight years … Third place in US Youth Soccer National Championships … AP Scholar with Honors in 2012 … National Honor Society member from 2012-2013.
Pieter Zenner – Midfielder – Riverside,
All-FCIAC 2011-2012 … All-State 2011-2012 … All-New England 2012 … Greenwich High MVP 2011-2012 … MSG Varsity 2012 Player of the Year … Led Greenwich to its first soccer appearance in a state semi-final since 1961 … Finished that season with the second-most goals (22) and the most assists (14) in a single season … 2012 AP Scholar … Member of the National Society of High School Scholars (2012) … Honor Roll grades 9-10 and High Honor Roll grade 11.
Stephen Yen – Midfielder – Concord,
