CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the second week in a row, the Harvard men’s soccer team has claimed a weekly league award with freshman forward Ashi Geberkidane earning Rookie of the Week honors for Oct. 21, the league announced Monday. Last week, senior midfielder Ross Friedman took home league Player of the Week honors.
The rookie from Denver, Colo., was instrumental in Harvard’s 2-1 win over Brown Saturday, netting both goals in the game and helping the Crimson to its second consecutive league win. The speedy forward got the Crimson on the board in the 18th minute of the match, tapping home a loose ball from close range thanks to assists from Philip Fleischman and Friedman. Less than 10 minutes later, Geberkidane struck again, using his head to bury a cross in the upper corner off a feed from classmate Andrew Wheeler.
Geberkidane now leads the Crimson with three goals on the season and is second on the squad with six points.
Harvard steps out of conference play for a Tuesday showdown with local foe Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The Crimson then returns home to host Princeton on Alumni Day at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium Saturday.
