No. 5 Harvard Cruises in 6-3 Victory Against No. 6 Cornell

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- THe fifth-ranked Harvard men's squash team topped sixth-ranked Cornell, 6-3, Saturday afternoon at the Barnaby Courts in the home opener. The Crimson improves to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Ivy League with the win while the Big Red falls to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Harvard jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after J. Reed Enderson quickly handled his opponent, Charlie Wagner, 3-0, at the No. 4 position. Cornell knotted the score as senior co-captain Frank Cohen lost in three games in the sixth spot to Rishi Jalan. William Ahmed lost a five-game battle at the eighth position against Amar Gupta and Richard Hill won a timely four-game match at the two slot against Thomas Spettigue to keep the score tied at two matches apiece.
Freshman Zeke Scherl fell to William Hartigan at the No. 3 spot, 3-1, as the Big Red grabbed a 3-2 lead. Alexander Ma dropped his first game at the No. 9 position to Owen Butler, but rebounded to win the next three games to tie the team score at 3-3. Senior co-captain Colin West notched a 3-0 victory over Alex Domenick at the No. 1 spot to give the home team a 4-3 margin. At the fifth position, rookie Jason Michas lost the first two games of his match against Arjun Gupta, but grabbed wins in the last three games, 11-6, 11-3, 11-9, to take the match and sealed the win for the Crimson. After Michas earned his comeback victory, Alex Lavoie gave Harvard the 6-3 margin by winning in five games against W. McKay Claghorn at the No. 7.
The Crimson returns to action Jan. 23, as it welcomes Rochester
to the Barnaby Courts.
