Power's Surge Sends Men's Squash Into Potter Cup Finals, 5-4

Gary Power rallied from two games down to win and send Harvard into the Potter Cup finals (Gil Talbot).

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 3 Harvard men's squash team survived a furious rally attempt by No. 2 Princeton to hold off the Tigers, 5-4, Saturday afternoon at the Brady Squash Courts to advance to the Potter Cup finals.

The Crimson, which led 4-2 heading into the final flight, saw the Tigers come back to tie the match, earning victories at No. 1 and No. 7, before No. 4 Gary Power rallied from two games down to stun Dylan Ward, 6-11, 10-12, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7, and send Harvard into the finals against No. 1 Trinity.

The match seesawed back and forth with the Tigers taking an early lead after winning two of the first three matches. Harvard's lone victory came at No. 9 in the first flight as Alexander Ma picked up his second triumph in as many days, defeating Michael LeBlanc, 11-7, 12-10, 11-5, in the first flight.

The Crimson responded by sweeping the second flight to take a commanding 4-2 advantage. Brandon McLaughlin topped Samuel Kang, 11-6, 16-14, 11-6, at No. 2, Tyler Olson edged Stephen Harrington, 12-10, 7-11, 11-8, 11-6, and Matt Roberts outlasted David Hoffman, 10-12, 11-8, 11-4, 19-17.

In the final flight, it looked like Harvard would have things locked up with undefeated and reigning CSA individual national champion Ali Farag on the courts; however, Todd Harrity, who won the individual title in 2011, upset Farag, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9, to get the Tigers back into the match. The Tigers also earned a win at No. 7 to draw even and set the stage for Power's heroic comeback.

The Crimson will face off with the Bantams Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in a matchup of the two teams with the most Potter Cups in history. Harvard has won the team national title 30 times, while Trinity has claimed it 13 times.
