Men’s Swimming and Diving Adds 12 for 2013-14 Season

12 newcomers will join a squad that has placed second in the Ivy League four straight years (Kevin Burns).

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Tim Murphy, the Ulen-Brooks Endowed Coach for Harvard Men's Swimming and Diving, has announced that 12 incoming freshman will be added to the Crimson's roster for 2013-14; Aly Abdel Khalik, Kenneth Castro-Abrams, Mitchell Foster, Cliff Goertemiller, Jack Manchester, Paul O'Hara, Manasseh Oso, Patrick Pender, Eric Ronda, Sean Satterthwaite, Sava Turcanu and Maxim Yakubovich. The 12 member Class of 2017 consists of five All-Americans, six state champions and four academic All-Americans.

"This year's incoming freshman class is a group of outstanding young men who have the potential to contribute significantly to our program," stated Murphy. "Our upperclassmen are ready to lead them in a productive and meaningful way to maximize their success in the pool and in the classroom."

Aly Abdel Khalik, 6'0", Mid-Distance Freestyle, Missisauga, Ont.
Competed for Etobicoke Swim Club … Represented Canada at the 2012 Junior Pan Pacific Championships where he placed third in the 200 free relay … Recipient of the Eastern Canadian Championships High Point Award in 2013 … Multiple-time Canadian Age Group Champion … Four-time Honor Roll student.

Kenneth Castro-Abrams, 6'1", Backstroke/IM, Novato, Calif.
Selected as captain his senior year and earned four varsity letters in swimming … Holds MCAL's record in 100 back … Named Second Most Outstanding Pacific Swimmer in 2011 … Three-time Academic All-American … National Hispanic Scholar … National Merit Consideration … National Council of La Raza … Volunteered at Lidere and Splash as a swim instructor.

Mitchell Foster, 6'3", Sprint Freestyle/Backstroke, Eden Prairie, Minn.
Two-time captain, five-year letterwinner … 13-time state champion … Earned All-America status seven times … Two-time section Swimmer of the Year … 20-time All-State selection … Three-time MVP … Minnesota high school record holder … Breck School record holder in seven events … Holds 13 pool records across Minnesota … Three-time Scholastic All-American … Citizenship Award Recipient … Class Vice President for three years … Student Ambassador for four years.

Cliff Goertemiller, 6'3", Distance Freestyle, Dayton, Ohio
Selected as captain his senior year and earned four varsity letters in swimming … Led Oakwood to a state championship in 2012 and a runner-up finish in 2011 … Two-time MVP … Oakwood Coaches' Award recipient as a senior … NICSA All-America selection as a junior … Three-time champion at Southwest Ohio Classic in 500 free and 1,650 free … Two-time champion at Southwest Ohio Classic in 200 free … USA Swimming sectionals 800 free and 1,500 free champion in 2010 … Placed second at Junior Nationals in 2012 in the 800 free … In 2011, had a top-five finish at the Ohio Open Water Championship … Set Ohio record in the 1,500 free (15:30.29) for 17-18 men in 2012 … In 2011, set Ohio record for 15-16 men in the 500 free (4:25.26) … Junior Nationals team member … 2012 Olympic Trials Qualifier … Two-time captain of the academic decathlon team … Led the academic decathlon team to two regional and state championships, and a national championship as the highest scoring student at all levels … Helped the academic decathlon team to be the first ever Division III team to attend national competition in 2011 … Two-time Principal Scholar Athlete.

Jack Manchester, 6'3", Backstroke/Freestyle, Huntersville, N.C.
Selected as captain his senior year and earned four varsity letters in swimming … Led Hough to back-to-back state runner-up finishes as a senior and junior … State champion in the 100 back and 200 free as a senior … Member of the state champion 100 relay team as a junior … Lake Norman Swimmer of the Year … Led his club team to a National Combined Championship in 2012 … His club team owns the national records for the 50 medley relay and 100 medley relay  … Two-time Scholastic All-American … High School All-American in 2013 … Volunteered at A Child's Place.

Paul O'Hara, 6'1", Sprint Freestyle, Alexandria, Va.
Selected as captain his senior year and earned four varsity letters in swimming … Led Gonzaga to three consecutive Washington Metropolitan Prep School Swimming and Diving League championships and Washington Metro Interscholastic Swim and Dive championship … At the WMPSSDL championships in 2012, placed first in the 200 IM setting a meet record with an All-America consideration time … Also placed first in the 100 breast at the WMPSSDL championships… Finished first in the 50 free and 100 free at Metros … Member of Gonzaga's 200 free relay team that placed first at WMPSSDL and Metro's … Three-time WMPSDDL Championship Individual High Point List selection … Holds Gonzaga records in the 50 free and 200 IM, and is a member of the record holding 200 free relay team … Earned two NISCA All-America times in the 50 free as a senior and junior … Earned NISCA All-America times consideration in the 100 free, 200 IM and as a member of the 200 free relay … Named The Washington Post All-Met first team as a senior and second team as a junior … Two-time team MVP … Recipient of the Purple Eagle as the most versatile swimmer as a junior … As a freshman, named Rookie of the Year … With the Nation's Capital Swim Club, competed at the 2011, 2012 and 2013 NCSA Junior National meets as a member of the 200 free, 400 free and 400 medley relay teams which all placed first overall … Member of the 400 medley relay team that set a new National Age Group record at NCSA … Three-time USA Swimming scholastic All-America selection … 2013 National Merit Scholarship Finalist … College Board AP Scholar … NISCA Academic All-American as a senior … Four-time Potomac Valley Swimming Scholar Athlete … Member of the Honor Roll for four years … Three-year member of the National Honor Society.

Manasseh Oso, 5'6", Diving, Glendale, Ariz.
Three-year captain, four-year letterwinner ... Ironwood three-meter record holder with a score of 478.4 ... Placed second at the state championships as a senior and was third as a junior … Two-time district champion ... Finished ninth at the state championships as a freshman and sophomore ... Named Arizona Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Coaches Association Division 1 Diver of the Year as a senior ... Earned team's Diver of the Year honor four times ... Sean Satterthwaite, 6'2", Freestyle, Edina, Minn.

Maxim Yakubovich, 6'0", Butterfly, Beaverton, Ore.
Four year letterwinner … Helped Southridge High School to a second-place finish at the state championships as a senior … Four-time All-State and team MVP honoree … Earned All-America status in the 100 butterfly  as a senior … State champion in the 100 butterfly as a junior and senior … Owns eight school records and 42 Portland Aquatic Club records … Received the Portland Aquatics Club Coaches Award in 2012 and 2013 … Qualified for the 2013 US Open Championships … Three-time Academic All-American … Two-year member of the National Honor Society and National Merit Consideration … Graduated in the top one percent of his class … International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate.
