Men's Swimming and Diving Claims Two First Place Finishes on Day 1 in Blacksburg
BLACKSBURG, Va. – After the first day in a quad meet with Virginia Tech, Virginia and Wisconsin, the No. 24-ranked men's swimming and diving team grabbed a pair of first-place finishes against the Hokies, Hoos and Badgers, led by Griffin Schumacher.
Schumacher touched the wall first in the eighth event of the afternoon, clocking in at 44.84 in the 100 free. Senior Chris Satterthwaite followed close behind with his 45.15 third-place finish. Freshman Eric Ronda was less than one second off the top time in the 200 breaststroke, finishing in second in 2:00.89 for the Crimson.
Schumacher spearheaded the Crimson's other first-place finish on the day, swimming the first leg of the 400 free relay, before Danny Crigler, Oliver Lee and Satterthwaite in a combined 2:59.47. Other notable finishes on the day include a fifth-place spot for Jacob Luna in the 200 butterfly (1:50.57) and a fifth place finish for freshman Jack Manchester in the 200 backstroke (1:48.91). On the boards, senior Joe Zarella a 317.90 to take eighth place in the event.
The Crimson is back in action on Saturday for the conclusion of the quad meet.
