CAMBRIDGE Mass. – Freshman Henry Steer went 3-0 and earned the Harvard Winter Invitational tournament championship held at the Murr Center tennis courts this weekend. Harvard participants excelled in all three days of competition compiling a 21-3 record in singles action and a 10-2 mark in doubles play.
Steer who entered the morning session 2-0 after recording two singles wins on Friday and Saturday, defeated Marist's Joris Van Eck in two sets 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Denis Nguyen and senior Alistair Felton were also flawless on the weekend going 3-0 in their singles matches.
The duo of Alistair Felton and Casey MacMaster who entered the tournament as the 45th ranked tandem according to the latest ITA rankings won the tournament doubles title after going 2-0 during the weekend. The duo recorded wins over the Marist team of Lorenzo Rossi and Matt Himmelsbach and Fordham's Kuba Kowalski and Srikar Alla. The newly formed team of Sophomore Christo Schultz and freshman Alex Steinroeder impressed those in attendance as well going 2-0 for the tournament earning wins over Kowalski and Alla and Van Eck and Billy Bishop.
Harvard will be back in action next weekend when they host the Harvard Kick Off tournament welcoming DePaul, Drake and Denver to the Murr Center from Jan. 27-28. This tournament will begin Harvard's dual-match season. Full results from day three of today's tournament can be found below.
