Denis Nguyen to Compete in Quarterfinals of USTA/ITA Men's Northeast Regional Championships
Denis Nguyen has only dropped one set in three matches at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships (Gil Talbot).
New Haven, C.T. – Denis Nguyen of the Harvard men's tennis team rebounded from a loss in the second set en route to a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 victory against Dragos Ignat of Columbia and a berth in quarterfinal round in the singles bracket of the Division I USTA/ITA Northeast Regional hosted by Yale.
Nguyen will face fourth-seed Vasko Mladenov of St. John's, who is ranked 38th in the nation, Monday at 10 a.m. with a trip to the semifinals and a chance to compete in the ITA National Championships, Nov. 8-11, on the line. The semifinal round is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
Nguyen held a bye in the opening round before defeating local opponent Michael McGinnis of Boston College, 6-4, 6-2. In the round of 32, he bested Princeton's Augie Bloom, 6-3, 6-1. The sophomore, who earned All-Ivy League honors for singles play in 2011-12, is one of seven student-athletes from Ancient Eight institutions to reach the quarterfinals.
Shaun Chaudhuri narrowly missed the quarterfinals, losing to Will Spector of Brown on a tiebreaker in the third set of the round of 16. The sophomore led Spector, 6-1, but dropped the second set, 6-2, to set up the deciding third frame. He swept Marist junior Dalen Klassen, 6-4, 6-1, and Cornell's Venkat Iyer, 6-3, 6-1.
Andy Nguyen won two matches to advance the round of 16 after a first-round bye. The senior co-captain defeated Ismael Dinia from Binghamton in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2, and edged Dragos Dima of Cornell, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. His run ended with a 6-2, 6-3 setback to Marc Powers of Yale.
In just his second weekend of collegiate competition, freshman Kelvin Lam swept Joris Van Eck of Marist, 6-2, 6-2, but was eliminated by Xander Centenari of Dartmouth, who advanced to the quarterfinals in the round of 32.
Freshman Nicholas Mahlangu beat Dartmouth's Sam Todd, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, in the round of 128 before falling to eventual quarterfinalist Sam Fleck of Cornell in a close match, 6-7, 6-0, 7-6.
In doubles competition, Nicky Hu and Andy Nguyen advanced to the fourth round after defeating the Dartmouth duo of Centenari and Cameron Ghorbani, while Lam and Denis Nguyen made a third-round exit.
After Nguyen wraps up play, the Crimson will prepare to host the Harvard Halloween Classic Oct. 26-28.
