Men's Volleyball Faces No. 13 Pepperdine and No. 1 Southern California in Midweek Matches

Harvard faces two ranked opponents in No. 13 Pepperdine and No. 1 Southern California this week (Gil Talbot).

The Particulars
The Harvard men’s volleyball team will complete its California road trip with matches at No. 13 Pepperdine and No. 1 Southern California, Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

About Harvard
The Crimson lost its first match of its west coast trip as Cal St. Northridge dropped Harvard to 7-6 overall with a 3-0 victory March 12.

Harvard is averaging 11.94 kills per set this season with a 24.1 hitting percentage. Matt Jones paces the Crimson with a 3.85 kills per set average, followed by Chris Gibbons at 2.69 and Kyle Rehkemper at 2.27 per set. Gibbons is also second on the Crimson with a 1.67 digs per set average, trailing Dan Schreff who is averaging 1.83 digs per set.

About Pepperdine
The Waves hold a 6-11 record this season and are 4-5 at home. Pepperdine has lost four straight, all to ranked opponents in the month of March. Following a two-match sweep at the hands of No. 10 Hawai’i, the Waves dropped home matches to No. 7 UC Irvine and No. 15 UC San Diego.

Pepperdine has averaged 12.4 kills per set this season, attacking at a 26.3 percent clip. Maurice Torres leads the Waves with a 3.79 kills per set average, while Chase Ross (2.68), Cory Riecks (2.11) and Matt Pollock (2.00) each average at least two kills per set.

About Southern California
The top-ranked Trojans are 14-1 this season and 8-0 at home. Southern Cal’s only loss came at Pepperdine Feb. 11 in a five-set thriller. Since that loss, the Trojans have won eight straight, seven of which have come against ranked opponents.

The Trojans have recorded 13.8 kills per set through the first two months of the season. Murphy Troy leads the way for Southern Cal, notching 4.25 kills per set. Two Trojans are averaging more than one block per set as Austin Zahn and Steven Shandrick average 1.08 and 1.02 blocks per set, respectively.

Looking Ahead
The Crimson returns home and will take on Springfield March 23. Harvard won the first meeting between the schools, 3-1, at the Malkin Athletic Center, Feb. 14.
