CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men's volleyball team recorded its sixth victory in EIVA, defeating Sacred Heart 3-1 at the Pitt Center Saturday afternoon.
The Crimson took a 1-0 lead in the match, winning the first set, 25-22. The Pioneers responded in the second stanza, 25-16, evening the score 1-1. With everything knotted up Harvard regained the lead by taking the third set, 25-22.
In the fourth stanza, the teams traded points tying the game six times with the last coming at the 14-point mark. A kill by sophomore Michael Owen regained the lead for Harvard and began a 7-1 run which forced two Sacred Heart timeouts. Out of the break, the Pioneers battled hard but Harvard was able to record four of the next seven points to seal the set 25-18 and take the match 3-1.
Senior Matt Jones, sophomores Will Chambers, Nick Madden and freshman DJ White all recorded double digit kills with 12, 10, 10 and 15, respectively. To go along with his 12 kills, Jones also had 10 digs, recording Harvard's fourth double-double of the season. Sophomore Chris Gibbons led the Crimson in digs with 17. Junior Rob Lothman handed out 48 assists while Madden paced the Crimson in blocks, tallying four of the team's 15.
The Pioneers were led by Nick Hunt who had 18 kills during the match. John Lutjen paced Sacred Heart with 43 assists and three blocks out of the team's total of nine. Connor Bohl led the squad with 15 digs.
Harvard concludes its 2011-12 home schedule with a pair of matches at the Malkin Athletic Center March 30-31. Harvard will first take the court against Rutgers-Newark on Friday at 7 p.m. and celebrate Senior Night on Saturday versus NJIT at 3 p.m.
