LORETTO, Pa. – The Harvard men's volleyball swept the season series with Saint Francis (Pa.) after defeating the Red Flash 3-1 on Friday night. DJ White recorded 20 kills in the winning effort to help the Crimson to its fifth-straight win.
Harvard opened with a 25-22 win, but Saint Francis evened the score with an identical 25-22 score. The Crimson took the third set 25-23 to set up a decisive fourth stanza.
Harvard jumped out to a 6-4 lead off a setting error by Kyle Beatty. The Red Flash went on a 4-2 run to even score at 8-8. With the mark, 11-11, The Crimson tallied the next three points to go up, 14-11, buoyed by kills by sophomore Nick Madden, Junior Rob Lothman and White. Later in the set Saint Francis cut the Harvard lead to 16-15 off an attack error by Matt Jones. The two teams battled hard but Harvard outlasted the Red Flash, scoring 10 out of 19 points to edge Saint Francis, 26-24, and the match 3-1.
White led the Harvard attack with 20 kills, while Jones was second on the team with 13. Lothman dished out 47 assists, while sophomore Chris Gibbons tallied 13 digs. Jones recorded a double-double as he had his 13 kills along with 10 digs.
Alex Kane led the Red Flash in kills with 21 while Ryan Williams tallied 50 assists. Nicholas Bancroft secured 16 digs. Adam Roche led Saint Francis with five blocks in the match.
The Crimson will look to avenge its loss to No. 7 Penn State earlier in the season, when it heads to State College, Pa. on Saturday afternoon. The Match is slated for 2 p.m.
