Clemens was named to the All-Tournament Team after leading the Crimson past Juniata (Ben Barnhart).
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Harvard men's volleyball team turned in one of its best offensive performances on the young season to defeat Juniata Saturday afternoon at the Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic, 3-1. The Crimson earned the victory by set scores of 25-16, 22-25, 25-17 and 25-13.
Branden Clemens led the attack with a career-high 19 kills and a .630 hitting percentage. The freshman committed just two errors on 27 attempts and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Nick Madden scored a match-high 20 kills to go along with a .351 hitting percentage while Michael Owen registered 12 kills and a .346 hitting percentage. Harvard (4-2, 1-1 EIVA) combined for a team hitting percentage of .303 thanks to 48 assists from Rob Lothman.
The Crimson defense was also on display as Harvard limited Juniata (4-2) to a .075 hitting percentage. Chris Gibbons picked up a season-best 13 digs in the victory with Madden and Owen each chipping in nine.
Harvard jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set but found itself trailing, 10-9, following a 5-1 Juniata run. The Crimson responded quickly to go back on top, 18-12, with a 9-2 spurt of its own and cruised down the stretch for the 25-16 run.
The second set went to Juniata, 25-22, and the teams traded points early in the third. With the score tied at 13, Harvard used a 3-0 to open up a 16-13 margin and then outscored the Eagles 9-3 for the win, 25-17.
The Crimson took control of the fourth set early on, opening a 14-7 lead thanks to a 5-1 stretch. Harvard never looked back and rolled to match point, 25-13.
The Crimson will make its home debut next week as it hosts Rivier on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Malkin Athletic Center.
