FAIRFAX, Va. – The Harvard men's volleyball team fell in straight sets to George Mason Friday night at the RAC, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-19.
Junior DJ White recorded 13 kills for Harvard (8-5, 6-2 EIVA) with senior Nick Madden and classmate Caleb Zimmick chipping in seven and five, respectively. Freshman Nick Bendell dished out 23 assists and senior Chris Gibbons led the defensive effort with 10 digs while Madden added eight.
George Mason (7-8, 3-4 EIVA) was led by freshman Radoslav Popov who turned in 13-kills, nine digs and redshirt-sophomore Paco Velez who notched 11 kills and seven digs.
The Patriots took a 4-0 lead to open the match. Harvard used a kill by DJ White to get on the board, but George Mason scored five unanswered points to take a 1-9 advantage. Another run put the Patriots on top 17-12 before the Crimson used a 5-1 spurt to make it a 20-17 match. Harvard could not overcome the host, however, as the teams traded points and George Mason took the first set, 25-21.
The Crimson took command in the second set, sprinting out to a 12-9 advantage. The Patriots rattled off four straight points to knot the match at 13. George Mason used a 7-2 stretch to swing the match in its favor, 20-15. Harvard rallied back to within two, 23-21, but the Patriots held onto the slim edge to claim the frame, 25-22.
In the final set, George Mason surged out to a 13-6 lead en route to a 25-19 triumph.
The Crimson will be back in action tomorrow as Harvard faces Princeton at 4 p.m. in Princeton, N.J.
