CHICAGO – In the second match of the 2015 season, Harvard men's volleyball could not pull off the upset against No. 1 Loyola (Ill.), falling in straight sets, 3-0. The defeat came by set scores of 25-23, 25-17, and 25-22.
Freshman Brad Gretsch posted seven kills on nine total attacks, finishing the match with a .556 hitting percentage. Casey White and Branden Clemens also contributed seven kills on the night, with White leading the Crimson with seven digs. In his first career start, freshman Marko Kostich recorded 27 assists.
The Crimson (0-2) nearly took the first set from the Ramblers (3-0) after getting out to an early lead. Trading points late, Harvard could not pull level and Loyola took the first set. With the score even at five apiece in the second, Loyola went on a 7-1 run to take control of the period, and went on to take a 2-0 advantage.
In a close third set, the Crimson nearly overcame a five-point deficit but fell 25-22 to give the Ramblers the victory.
Harvard returns to Cambridge for its home opener January 23 against Ball State. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
