White brothers help Harvard to first victory of the year (Gil Talbot).
CAMBRIDGE, Mass – In the first home match of the 2015 season, Harvard toppled No. 14 Ball State in straight sets, 3-0, to win its first match of the year. The victory came by set scores of 25-19, 25-14, 25-17.
Sophomore Casey White led the Crimson (1-2) with 12 kills and a .632 hitting percentage and neared a double-double with nine digs. He also tallied four blocks in the match. DJ White and Branden Clemens each registered seven kills in the victory, with DJ White collecting 12 digs. Caleb Zimmick led the team with five blocks and contributed six kills as well.
Defensively, Harvard held the Cardinals (4-1) to a .122 hitting percentage with eight total team blocks.
Harvard fell behind early in the opening set, 6-2, but responded with a 9-4 run to take the lead. The Crimson would not give up that advantage in the set, using multiple runs to take the first period, 25-19.
The Crimson took an early lead in the second set, prompting a Cardinals timeout. Unfazed, Harvard immediately exploded for a seven-point run to push the lead to double digits, 16-6. Ball State managed to cut the lead to seven, but three-consecutive kills from Casey White pushed the set out of reach.
The two teams traded points for the first half of the third set, with both teams exchanging one-point leads. With the score knotted at 10 apiece, Harvard went on a 5-1 run sparked by kills from Clemens and DJ White. The Crimson hit .400 as a team in the final stanza to pick up the third set, 25-17.
Harvard returns to action at the Malkin Athletic Center on Saturday, Jan. 24 against No. 11 IPFW. The match will be broadcast on the Ivy League Digital Network, with the first serve at 4 p.m.
