CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Matthew Jones '12 has been named a coaching assistant for both the Harvard men's and women's volleyball teams, the second person to fill the position, while Jeffrey Aucoin will be designated specifically to the women's team.
"I am very excited to have Matt join our staff," commented Jennifer Weiss, head coach of women's volleyball. "Not only was he an accomplished student-athlete while at Harvard, but he has gained considerable volleyball knowledge while coaching the last three years. We are very fortunate to have Matt back in the Harvard community."
Jones comes back to Cambridge after spending three seasons as the head coach for men's volleyball at Santa Barbara City College in Santa Barbara, California. During that stint, he was also the 18-and-under boys head coach for the Santa Barbara Volleyball Club and the Director of MadSkills, a clinic for girls in grades four through eight.
"We are very excited to have Matt returning to our program," said Brian Baise, head coach of men's volleyball. "His experience as a student-athlete at Harvard, and his professional experience, both as a player and as a coach, will make him a tremendous asset to our team and to our coaching staff."
Jones began his coaching career as the head coach for the Coast Volleyball Club boy's 16-year-old second team in Sorrento Valley, California and an assistant coach for the boys' 18-year-old top team, which took the bronze medal at the 2013 Junior Olympics. He also was the Laguna Blanca High School boy's beach volleyball head coach.
The former outside hitter's name floods Harvard's career records book ranking first in kills (1,218) and aces (97), third in kills per set (3.76), sixth in digs (452) and block assists (178), seventh in total blocks (206), and ninth in solo blocks (28). The four-year letterwinner was also named to the 2012 All-EIVA first team, the EIVA All-Tournament Team, and the EIVA All-Academic team.
The La Jolla, California native graduated from Harvard in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics focusing in statistics. In October 2012, Jones was selected for an opportunity to play internationally on the Volley Bartreng in Bertange, Luxemburg where he helped the team make the playoffs for the first time in 10 years while also coaching and tutoring members of the club's youth team in mathematics.
