Men's Water Polo Sweeps Iona and Fordham To Run Win Streak To Five

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Harvard ran its winning streak to five games with a pair of wins over Fordham and Iona Saturday at Blodgett Pool.

The Crimson used seven different goal scorers to knockoff the Rams, 12-7, in the first game of the day before locking down Iona defensively in a win, 11-3. Harvard improves to 8-5 overall and 3-0 in conference to post the teams first winning streak of over four games since the team won eight straight in 2002.

Junior co-captain Will Roller led the balanced attack against Fordham with a hat trick and an assist. Ben Zepfel, John Holland-McCowan and Noah Harrison all added two goals and an assist, while Blake Lee, Ryan Rule and Evan Murphy each added a single tally to account for the rest of the offense.

Harvard got off to a quick start with three goals in the first period to lead by two. The Crimson added another three goals in the second to extend the lead to three by intermission.

In the second half, Harvard continued to stretch the lead, winning the third 4-2, before playing even in the fourth to hold on for the victory.

Jimmy Field stopped seven shots in goal in his half of play, while Colin Woolway made three saves in the other half. Harrison chipped in defensively with three steals to up his team-best total to 24, and Lee contribuetd two more of his own.

In the second game of the day, Harvard used a complete defensive effort to shut down Iona.

The Crimson recorded a season-high 17 steals to limit the Gaels to single tallies in three of the four periods. Lee finished with a team-high four steals, and Zepfel made three. Field also made 11 saves in goal to stonewall the Gaels.

On the offensive side, Max Murphy contributed three goals and two assists, and Zepfel netted another hat trick. Lee and Harrison found the back of the net twice, and Harrison also added two helpers.

Harvard heads to Connecticut College Sunday looking to improve to 4-0 in CWPA play.
