Men's Water Polo Drops Two Games at Gary Troyer Tournament

CLAREMONT, Calif. – No. 9 Loyola Marymount and Claremont-M-S both used early leads to knock off the Harvard men's water polo team Saturday at the Gary Troyer Tournament at Axelrod Pool.

The Lions used the fast start to pull away from the Crimson, 22-9 while the Stags prevailed in a shootout, 16-12. Harvard now falls to 12-10 on the season.

In the first game of the day, LMU outscored the Crimson, 8-3, out of the gates in the first eight minutes. Harvard hung tough in the second frame, but the Lions continued to build on the early advantage, stretching the lead to seven at intermission. In the second half, the Lions continued to pull away to send Harvard to its third defeat in the Gary Troyer Tournament.

Robbie Fluegge, Evan Ramsey and Blake Lee all tallied two goals to pace the Crimson. Ryan Rule, Ben Zepfel and John Holland-McCowan each contributed single scores, while Noah Harrison delivered three assists, and Will Roller added two helpers.

On the defensive end, Colin Woolway stopped six shots in goal, and Jimmy Field made four saves.

The Stags used the same formula in the second game of the day for the Crimson.

Claremont-M-S took a three-goal advantage into the second before both offenses took over. The two teams combined for 15 goals in the second with the Crimson winning the period, 8-7, to enter the break down by two.

The two teams played evenly in the second half with the Stags outscoring the Crimson by two to hold on for the win.

Ramsey was the top scorer for the Crimson for the second straight game with a hat trick. Max Murphy and Roller both netted two goals with Roller chipping in three assists, as well. Fluegge had one goal and two assists, and Max Eliot, Holland-McCowan, Rule and Harrison each chipped in one goal.  

Woolway (seven saves) and Field (six saves) split time in net.

Harvard returns to the pool Sunday at 3 p.m. versus No. 2 UC Santa Barbara.
