CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After a successful opening weekend at the Miken Classic in Boca Raton, Fla., junior Rachel Brown and senior co-captain Ellen Macadam have been named Ivy League Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, in the league’s first rendition of the weekly awards. The duo helped the Crimson to a 3-2 record at the season-opening tournament.
Brown channeled her form that saw her earn first-team All-Ivy League accolades as a sophomore, collecting three wins in three appearances this weekend. In the team’s first game of the season, Brown twirled a two-hit shutout and fanned 14 batters in a 2-0 win over Seton Hall. In her next start, Brown held a potent Michigan State offense to two runs on five hits, going the distance in a 7-2 win and striking out 11 Spartan hitters. The junior earned her third win of the weekend, pitching 2.1 innings of relief in a 4-3 win over Providence, holding the Friars to one hit and striking out three.
Macadam had a stellar offensive weekend, collecting nine hits in 18 at-bats over five games. Against host Florida Atlantic, Macadam went 3-for-4 and scored a run and followed up with a second 3-for-4 performance against Michigan State, bashing a homerun and a double and collecting a pair of RBI in a 7-2 win. The senior picked up two more hits against Stony Brook and led off Harvard’s final game of the tournament with her second homer of the weekend to help the Crimson to a 4-3 win over Providence.
Harvard will resume play this weekend with the start of its California road trip, taking on UC Riverside Friday at 5 p.m. to kick off its nine-day stay in the Golden State.
