CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the second time in as many weeks, a Harvard softball player has been named Ivy League Rookie of the Week as pitcher Morgan Groom earned the honor for April 23. Groom is the first Harvard pitcher to receive a weekly league award this season.
Groom was a key facet in a strong week for the Crimson, as Harvard went 5-1 in six contests, including a 3-1 mark in four league games against Brown. The rookie started the week by picking up the victory in a slugfest against Quinnipiac, striking out three batters in five innings of work in a 9-4 victory. The outing that followed was the best of the season for Groom, as she came within one out of tossing a no-hitter in the series opener against Brown. She finished the contest with seven strikeouts, allowing Harvard to shutout the Bears, 4-0.
Her third start of the week was another gem, as she twirled a two-hitter in Game 3 against Brown. She matched her season-high strikeout total with eight in the game, and led the Crimson to a 6-2 win on the road. She finished the week with a 1.84 earned-run average and 18 strikeouts in 19 innings pitched. Opposing hitters batted just .129 against her in those three starts, combining for just eight hits.
Harvard is back in action Thursday in a single game against local foe Boston College at 4 p.m.
