Two Ivy Weekly Awards For Softball After Purple and Gold Challenge Title
Laura Ricciardone picked up her second straight Pitcher of
the Week nod (Gil Talbot).
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the second straight week, the Harvard softball team has produced two Ivy League weekly award winners, the league announced Tuesday. Junior pitcher Laura Ricciardone received her second straight Ivy Pitcher of the Week nod, while freshman hurler Taylor Cabe was dubbed Co-Rookie of the Week.
After a stellar opening weekend of action, Ricciardone followed it up with one of the strongest outings of her collegiate career. The Slidell, La., native took on the host No. 23 LSU Tigers in her first game of the weekend and shut out the potent LSU offense for 12 innings in a dramatic 1-0 victory for the Crimson. She tallied nine strikeouts in the contest, and surrendered just seven hits over the 12 frames. Ricciardone followed up that performance with another solid effort in a 4-2 loss to Iowa State, allowing just two runs in five innings of work. She finished the weekend with a 0.82 earned-run average and gave up just 12 hits in 17 total innings. She was also named to the Purple and Gold Challenge All-Tournament team.
Cabe made her case as Harvard’s second starting pitcher with a strong weekend of work, posting a 2-0 record for the tournament champion Crimson. She appeared in four of the five games over the weekend, the most of any Harvard pitcher, and in 14 innings, allowed just three earned runs for a 1.5- ERA. She also totaled seven strikeouts for the Crimson.
Harvard gets the next weekend off and then heads west for its annual spring break trip to California. The Crimson kicks off its west coast swing with the SDSU Tournament March 15-17 in San Diego, Calif.
