CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Kelly Cole, a member of the Harvard women's basketball coaching staff over the last two seasons, has accepted the position of head coach at Northeastern University, the school announced today.
"We were so lucky to have Kelly with us at Harvard, even for just two years," said head coach Kathy Delaney-Smith. "Kelly brought great knowledge, experience and energy to our team and I believe Northeastern has gotten themselves one of the best. I, for one, am so glad she is going to be just across town!"
Harvard posted a 43-17 record in Cole's two years with the squad, including 22-6 mark in Ivy League play. Primarily working with the Crimson's forwards, Cole helped Harvard register the second-most wins in program history with a 22-8 record in 2013-14. The Crimson became the first Ivy League program to earn an at-large berth into a postseason tournament, advancing to the second round of the WNIT for the second-consecutive season with Cole. Cole aided in the development of Temi Fagbenle, a first team All-Ivy selection that led the conference in rebounding.
Cole brought 21 years of coaching experience to Lavietes Pavilion on her arrival, including three appearances in the Sweet 16 as a member of the Boston College staff.
Cole spent five seasons working as a head coach at the high school level, including at Buckingham Browne & Nichols in Cambridge.
Cole worked a total of nine seasons at Boston College under head coach Cathy Inglese, spending seven of those seasons as an assistant coach before being promoted to associate head coach in May of 2004. While in Chestnut Hill, Cole helped the Eagles to a 192-89 overall record and seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including trips to the Sweet 16 in 2003, 2004 and 2006.
She began her collegiate coaching career at her alma mater, Northwestern, where she helped the Wildcats to the WNIT semifinals in 1996 and to the NCAA Tournament in 1997. Cole began her coaching career as the head girls basketball coach and head volleyball coach at Newberg High School from 1992-96.
Cole graduated from Northwestern University in 1991 with a degree in secondary education and English. She played four seasons for the Wildcats, serving as team captain from 1989-91, and finished her career having scored 1,206 career points.
