Radcliffe’s Lofgren, Huppert Earn All-America Honors

bullet CRCA Release

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-Senior Esther Lofgren and junior Laura Huppert of the Radcliffe heavyweight crew have been named to the 2009 Pocock All-America teams, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association has announced.

Lofgren was one of 24 first-team All-America selections, while Huppert was one of 21 athletes chosen to the All-America second team. It was the second career selection for Lofgren, also picked 2007 before missing the following season to train with USRowing. Both oarswomen were previously named to the All-New England first team.

Both athletes were members of the Radcliffe varsity eight this season, helping the boat climb as high as No. 6 in the national rankings and leading the team to its third straight berth in the NCAA Championships. They led the Black and White to a runner-up finish at Eastern Sprints and an 11-4 dual record.

Lofgren finished the season rowing in the four seat for the Black and White varsity eight, while Huppert occupied the seven seat. Lofgren, a Newport Beach, Calif., native, rowed in the varsity eight for the third season. Huppert, who hails from Oakland, Calif., joined Radcliffe's top boat at the outset of last season. Both are two-time all-region selections.

The awards recognize the outstanding performances of rowers and coxswains by choosing top performers among those named to their all-region teams. Nominated student-athletes are evaluated on the strength of their team's regional finish, coaches' recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their teams' varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season.
