Fourth Place at Head of the Charles for Radcliffe Heavyweight Four

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—A fourth-place finish in the women's championship fours highlighted the Radcliffe heavyweight crew's weekend competing in the 46th Head Of The Charles Regatta Saturday and Sunday on the Charles River.
Radcliffe's championship four was made up of top athletes returning from last season's varsity eight, and they were among the fastest entries in the 20-boat field. They owned the second-fastest time through the final time checkpoint, the Cambridge Boat Club, but were slowed by two boats that were later penalized for impeded their passing.
The Black and White finished in 18:00.008, less than two seconds behind third-place Riverside Boat Club. Cornell and Brown took the top two spots in the race. Fifth-place Virginia was nearly seven seconds off Radcliffe's time and was followed by Princeton less than a second later.
"They had a really strong race," head coach Liz O'Leary said of the Radcliffe four. "It was a fun weekend. It was great to have a majority of our program out there racing and great to have a large alumni group back together. That's a lot of what this weekend is all about."
Radcliffe fielded a pair of championship eights, which placed 17th and 22nd. The championship eight A crossed the finish in 16:54.651. The Black and White club eight had a strong showing Saturday, taking eighth place among 30 crews in 18:43.437. Two full eights of Radcliffe alumnae also competed, earning 10th-place and 15th-place finishes.
O'Leary herself registered a win, as well as a 30-year anniversary. Her Etats Unis Rowing Club took first in the women's senior-master eights event Saturday. The team was made up of athletes named to the 1980 U.S. Olympic team but unable to compete in Moscow due to the U.S. boycott of the Games.
