CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The Radcliffe heavyweight varsity eight captured its fourth title, and victories by the second varsity eight and varsity four helped the No. 13 Black and White continue its team dominance in the fifth annual Beanpot regatta Saturday morning on the Charles River Basin.

In the varsity race (video available at, Radcliffe (11-4) and defending champion Northeastern distanced themselves quickly, gaining a boat-length margin on the field in the first 500 meters. The Black and White held a three-seat lead for much of the second 500 meters before pushing out to a length ahead of the Huskies shortly after the race's midway point.

The Black and White distanced itself farther down the stretch, winning by 8.1 seconds in 6:43.9. Boston University outlasted MIT for third place, 7.7 seconds behind Northeastern and 2.7 ahead of the Engineers. Boston College was fifth, another 17.2 seconds back. Radcliffe also claimed the Allen-DeWolfe Trophy with its win over BU and the Rowlands Trophy with the defeat of Northeastern. The Black and White holds a 12-3 lead in the Allen-DeWolfe cup series and a 13-5 edge in the Rowlands series.

"It's always a pleasure and a challenge to race our neighbors on the Charles, and I was very happy with our performance today." said Radcliffe head coach Liz O'Leary. "We expected Northeastern to be a tough opponent, and they were. I liked the way our varsity withstood that challenge and kept racing hard until the end. The second varsity and the four had very nice wins, and the 3V fought its way back from behind to give Northeastern all it could handle."

The Radcliffe second varsity finished far ahead of the field, pulling away to a 12.8-second win in 7:07.0, followed by Northeastern, BU, MIT and BC. The varsity four followed with an open-water win of its own, by 9.3 seconds in 7:43.5. Northeastern placed second, with BU third and BC fourth.

The closest race of the regatta was the final one. Northeastern appeared to be in total control in the second half of the race, but Radcliffe battled back to challenge before the Huskies hung on by 1.9 seconds. The Black and White finished in 7:16.9, more than 12 seconds ahead of third-place BU. The Radcliffe fourth varsity eight placed fourth in 8:04.1.
