CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The No. 12 Radcliffe heavyweight varsity eight hung on to win a thrilling race for the O'Leary Cup, leading a regatta sweep for the Black and White against No. 20 Dartmouth and Syracuse Saturday morning on the Charles River.
The Black and White (7-3) won the varsity race by 1.6 seconds over the runner-up Big Green and 4.3 seconds over the Orange to start the regatta. The second varsity eight and varsity fours followed with more lopsided wins, all into a moderate headwind.
"I think what was most impressive was the depth and strength and speed of the team as a whole," said head coach Liz O'Leary. "Everybody just rowed great races. They rowed hard, and they rowed aggressively. It was really cool to see our team able to do that."
Radcliffe led the varsity race most of the way, but every time the Black and White made a move, the Big Green (5-1) countered. Dartmouth could never catch the Black and White, however, and Radcliffe won in 6:56.8 to hand the Big Green its first loss. Dartmouth finished in 6:58.2, and Syracuse (5-7) was close behind in 7:01.1.
"The varsity race was quite a race to watch, no matter what team you were looking at," said O'Leary. "It was just a really exciting race. I appreciate that we were able to come out of it with the win."
The Black and White controlled the other races from the early stages. The second varsity won by nearly 16 seconds in 7:12.3, and the varsity four A followed with a time of 7:57.9, good for a 13.4-second win. The Dartmouth second varsity placed second, as did the Syracuse four.
Radcliffe's varsity four B finished more than seven seconds ahead of the field. The third varsity eight split into a pair of fours, which raced against Northeastern. The Black and White boats pulled away early, with the Radcliffe C entry coming from behind to win in 8:31.5.
