CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Radcliffe heavyweight crew had four top-three finishes in three races at the Foot of the Charles regatta on the Charles River Saturday. The Black and White novice eight earned Radcliffe's best finish with a win over 15 other boats to culminate an undefeated fall season.
Radcliffe opened the regatta with second- and third-place finishes in the varsity fours event by navigating through multiple traffic jams. The Black and White's best boating was one of two that rowed the course in less than 14 minutes. Radcliffe notched a 13:58.6 mark, second to Syracuse's 13:50.8. In third, Radcliffe had a 14:10.7 finishing time. The Black and White also had varsity four boats that finished in eighth and 18th of the race that featured 42 entrants.
The crew's novice eight boat won its third race of the fall during the beautiful afternoon on the Charles. Radcliffe easily outpaced the 15 other novice groups as no boat came within 20 seconds of the Black and White's 13:41.5 mark. Only Boston College was within 30 seconds of Radcliffe's pace, finishing in second at 14:04.2. Radcliffe's third win comes after previously topping competition at the Head of the Housatonic and Green Monster regattas.
In the final race of the day, Radcliffe's third varsity eight jumped to an early lead before the final turn of the course. The Black and White took the curve out in front, but Rhode Island came from the middle of the pack to clip Radcliffe and the other 12 boats in the race. URI's eight rowed to a 13:57.6 time, 2.1 seconds quicker than the Black and White.
Radcliffe will continue training throughout the winter in preparation for its 2013 spring schedule.
