CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The fourth-ranked Radcliffe lightweight crew defeated its first ranked opponent and captured its first trophy of the season, sweeping two races and defending the Class of 2004 Cup against No. 5 Georgetown on a sunny Saturday morning on the Charles River.

The Black and White varsity eight (2-0) pulled away to an open-water, five-second win after the second varsity cruised to beat the Hoyas by nearly 11 seconds. The varsity win gave Radcliffe its second straight Class of 2004 Cup win and its fourth in the six-year history of the trophy.

“That was a big, important win for us,” said Radcliffe head coach Heather Cartwright. “I’m very pleased with how our team composed itself.”

The Georgetown varsity eight took the lead in the first few strokes off the starting line, but Radcliffe rallied quickly and built its lead as the race went on. There was overlap between the boats for the first 1,500 meters until the Black and White pulled away to open water in the final strokes. Radcliffe finished in 7:24.5, and Georgetown crossed the line in 7:29.9.

“We still have a lot to work on technically,” Cartwright added. “Georgetown looked very technically sound, and I expect them to get much faster by the time we see them again at Eastern Sprints and the national championships.”

The Radcliffe second varsity eight also improved to 2-0, finishing in 7:46.7. Georgetown reached the finish in 7:57.5.
