CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Black and White won the lightweight eights race at the Head of the Charles Regatta Oct. 21 for the first time in the history of the regatta. It was Harvard's 42nd win in the history of the HOCR, the world's largest two-day rowing event.

Radcliffe knew it had the potential to fend off defending champion Wisconsin in this year's eights race and did just that to capture the title. The Black and White completed the three-mile course winding through Boston and Cambridge in 16:58.83 to best the Badgers by over two seconds. Wisconsin's 17:01.29 finish was good for second and well ahead of crews from Stanford (17:36.09), Princeton (17:49.39) and MIT (17:50.81) in the regatta's final event.

With the win, Radcliffe earned its eighth Head of the Charles first-place finish.

In the fours race, Radcliffe finished 13th, clocking in at 21:17.73. That competition featured a pair of Harvard alumnae, Maryana Vrubel '12 and Elizabeth Bates '11, which helped Vesper Boat Club to a second-place showing. Vesper completed the route in 19:22.94, behind Western University's winning time of 19:01.39.
